Wizard Authors

Inspired by the news that Derek Marsden and Ray Moore have a book about The Wizard coming out. I suddenly remembered I'd compiled this list a while back and had never published it.

Information about the authors who wrote anonymously for D. C. Thomson's boys' papers is scant. It was an area that greatly interested Bill Lofts and Derek Adley when they came to compile The Men Behind Boys Fiction and they did a certain amount of research where they could. Unfortunately, even where they were able to discover names, the finished book for the most part did not give any details of what the authors had written, simply noting that they had anonymously contributed to the various magazines.

Fifty years further down the line, finding information is now even more difficult as many of the authors have passed on.  This must, therefore, be considered a very partial listing.

Boys' World Artists and Authors

Artists and Authors who contributed to Boys' World (1963-64). The following listing does not cover the Boys' World Annual, although an expanded listing can be found in my book Boys' World: Ticket to Adventure.

As with all these lists, I've provided links to various notes on the creators; no link usually means either: (a) there's plenty of information already out there; (b) I've not gotten around to writing them up; or (c) I looked and couldn't find anything.

Commando Artists

It's amazing to think that a mere 144 artists have produced the 4,545 issues** of Commando. Of course, there have been plenty of reprints over the years, but Commando has still published a great many original stories over the years and continues to produce them at the rate of two new yarns every fortnight. Some artists, notably Gordon Livingstone and Cecil Rigby, spent most of their artistic careers working on Commando and even some European and South American artists – Jose Maria Jorge, for instance – were better known in the UK than in their native countries.

A listing of Commando authors can be found here, which includes some links to interviews. The official website can be found here.

** As of March 2025, the total has become 165 artists on 5,842 issues.

Starblazer Artists / Authors

What follows is a list of artists and authors known to have contributed to Starblazer. The comic ran for 281 issues between 1979 and 1991; as far as I know it is complete for authors and internal artists although I have not made any attempt to list artists who only contributed covers. Further information about any of the creators listed below would be very welcome.

I've linked to a number of offsite (⇒) pages but whilst the Wikipedia pages are general overviews, the other links are specifically where an author/artist has discussed Starblazer.

Fleetway Pocket Library authors

The following list contains the names of as many of the scriptwriters who contributed to Fleetway's pocket libraries, including War, Battle, Air Ace, Love Story, True Life, Thriller, Cowboy, Super Detective and Schoolgirls. The few records available often covered only a part of the lifetime of each of these titles, so the listing is certainly incomplete.

Modern Wonder Artists and Authors

Modern Wonder was first published 22 May 1937. It was tabloid in format, published weekly with about 20 pages and cost 2d. It was aimed at boys and young men, containing illustrated articles and stories, often action true-life and science fiction. Some stories were lengthy serials. It was later renamed Modern Wonders, but still keeping to the volume and issue numbers and then in March 1940 it became Modern World. The magazine folded 29 March 1941, probably because of newsprint restrictions.

A consistent feature was articles about science and technology and later-on warfare, illustrated by cutaway drawings, often by Leslie Ashwell Wood and Robert Barnard Way. Another artist later to become famous for marine subjects was Kenneth Brooks. The covers and the centrefold were usually in colour, and the interior page illustrations were usually black and white.

The majority of the artists and writers and now quite unknown, alas.

Look and Learn group Artists & Authors

The following is a list of artists and authors known to have worked for Look and Learn, Treasure, Bible Story and Speed & Power magazines. I've included the artists who worked on comic strips as well as illustrators. Some of the Wikipedia links will take you to stubs for entries and occasionally to foreign language entries (Italian or Spanish as indicated). I can't guarantee the accuracy of these entries although a few of them I try to maintain myself.

Anyone with information about any of these artists is very welcome to get in touch.
