Commando Artists

It's amazing to think that a mere 144 artists have produced the 4,545 issues of Commando. Of course, there have been plenty of reprints over the years, but Commando has still published a great many original stories over the years and continues to produce them at the rate of two new yarns every fortnight. Some artists, notably Gordon Livingstone and Cecil Rigby, spent most of their artistic careers working on Commando and even some European and South American artists – Jose Maria Jorge, for instance – were better known in the UK than in their native countries.

A listing of Commando authors can be found here, which includes some links to interviews. The official website can be found here.

  1. I was one of those 144! Wow. I did not know there was so few but makes me honoured to be mentioned in such great company. I remember being really chuffed seeing the issue in Smiths with a painting by Ian Kennedy. Unfortunately i only did one issue much to my regret and to be honest it was early in my career. Love to have another go one day. Even so i am still do work for DC Thomson doing illustrations for the legendary People's Friend.

    Martin Baines

p.s I know John Ridgeway and Keith Page does still do good work for them which i tend always to collect

  2. Hi Martin,

Yes, I was very surprised when I totted up the list and found that it was only 144 artists. But the 4,500 issues probably include 1,500 reprints (I haven't checked) and you only need a few artists like Jose Maria Jorge, who produced 100 issues, to achieve 3,000 issues.

Jose wasn't their most prolific contributor. That would probably be Gordon Livingstone. Cecil Rigby and Denis McLoughlin were also very heavy contributors and artists like Keith Page and Ibanez have been working on the title for ages.

That's the good thing about DCT: they reward reliability with a steady supply of work.

  3. Hi. Mira (José Mira?) is not José Mira. In my opinion ist Luis Martínez Mira (born in Murcia, Spain, 1928), father of Luis Alejandro Martínez Mira. Any tittle your ist Commando nº 4678 "The Man in Black". Greatings.

  4. Giralt (I knew) ist not Emilio Giralt Ferrando... Ist Joan Giralt Banús.

  5. Ortiz ist José Ortiz Moya, brother of Leopoldo Ortiz.
And Morahin is Jorge Morhain (Argentina).

  6. Thanks Jose. I've made a change with Giralt. I'm pretty sure that Jose Ortiz (who, admittedly, did a lot of work in the UK) didn't do any issues of Commando, but I'll see if I can double check; also, Morhain is Mario Morhain - he talks of working on Commando in an interview I've seen.

  7. Hi. Commando was made by Josep Nebot Alegret. Not for his brother Joan Nebot Alegret.
