Sydney Moorhouse

Yay, another Swift Annual author...

Sydney Moorehouse, F.R.G.S., F.Z.S., was born in Huddersfield in 1909 and educated at Moldgreen and Huddersfield College. Moorehouse was the Press Officer for Harewood Horse Trials, 1953-59.

He was a prolific writer of guides for towns and villages around Lancashire and Yorkshire which he continued to write into the 1960s. As well as his books, he also contributed to the Birmingham Post, Field, Horse and Hound, Farm and Country, The Times, Sunday Times, Daily Telegraph, Rugby World, Cricketer, Horseman's Year, Chamber's Journal, Woman's Magazine, Contemporary Review, Boy's Own Paper and other papers. Moorhouse was also a regular writer for the Northern radio service of the BBC. Based on his contributions to other titles, I suspect his contribution to Swift Annual 1962 (1961) might be 'Wonder Dogs of the Hills', a feature about sheepdogs (pic above). But that's a guess.

He was a member of the Institute of Journalists, the Guild of Agricultural Journalists and the Circus Fans Association.

Moorehouse was married to Hilda Hamer and had one son and one daughter. He lived in Morecambe, Lancashire. He was listed in the Author's and Writer's Who's Who for a number of years, at least until the 1972 edition.

  1. Thankyou for solving a mystery. A friend lent me a copy of Walking in Yorshire by Sydney Moorehouse. It's a lovely little 'postlet' and I was intrigued to know it's date of publication, unfortunately it carries none. I'd narrowed it down to 1935 or 36 but you've given me the exact date, thanks very much!
