Pierre Probst, the French author and illustrator best known as the creator of Caroline, a feisty 7-year-old, and her animal friends, died in Suresnes, France, on 12 April, aged 93.
Caroline was based on his own daughter and first appeared in Une Fête chez Caroline in1953. Probst went on to write over 40 more of her adventures as Caroline and her pets travel around the world. A number of these were published in Britain and the USA helping the books towards a sale of 38 million worldwide. Probst also illustrated a number of books by Enid Blyton, including the 'Little Gift Book' series of translated stories in 1954.
