Further information on Alfred Walter Barrett

Further information on Alfred Walter Barrett. I've made no attempt to work this into the previous entry on Barrett as there is still a good deal of research needed to resolve some of the questions surrounding Barrett.

Birth

Born at Stockwell, Surrey, on 1 May 1869, to...

Edith Barrett (nee Goodsell) (b. Stockwell, Surrey, c.1851) [poss. registered Battle, Sussex, 1Q 1851], daughter of Samuel Goodsell [b. Salehurst, Sussex c.1809; family name was probably Gutsell] and Mary [poss. Mary Harmer, m. 7 Apr 1828, Etchingham, Sussex].

and Leonard Lavis Barrett (b. Exeter, Devon, 1846, the son of Leonard and Francis Barrett) (second mate in the Mercantile Service; Custom's Officer 1881; manager at a rope factory 1891-1901).

They were married at Brixton, Surrey, on 9 April 1867. Children include:
  • Leonard H. (b. Stockwell, London, c.1868) [poss. registered Lambeth 3Q or 4Q 1867, no middle initial]: worked as a messenger and later clerk for the postal telegraph; probably died Totnes 3Q 1918, aged 50.
  • Mabel, born in Gerrans, Cornwall (c.1873). Later became a pupil teacher for the London School Board.
1871: Edith living with her father, Samuel Goodsell with Leonard; poss. also two others: Edith Goodsell (14)[*] and Anne Goodsell (9)
[*] Edith Mary Goodsell (b. Stockwell, c.1858) daughter of William & Charlotte Goodsell (nee Press, m. Medway 4Q 1856). Also had daughter Charlotte (b. Stockwell, 4Q 1859)

Edith poss. death registered at Totnes, 4Q 1928, aged 70

Marriage

Alfred Walter Barrett married Ellen Maud Bray in 1Q 1889, registered at West Ham.

Barretts' on the move

Lived at Wallwood Road, Leytonstone until at least March 1895.

Lived in "Myrtle Villa" [poss. ex-Harold Villa], South Woodford from at least August 1895 until c. 1900 when he moved back to his parents' address.

Lodging next door at 28 were Bertha Barrett (25) and Nellie Goodsell (26)

Lived at 'Elbury', 63 Tunley Road, Balham, London S.W.17

Alfred lived here alone between 1914-19 when he was joined by his friend Louis Gunnis, who lived at the same address until 1923 before moving to his own house. Nellie and Leslie joined Alfred in 1920 and the three of them were listed as residents until the Autumn of 1923. Leslie had moved by Spring 1924 to live with his wife at 8 Balham Park Road.

Alfred disappeared from the 1932 volume, which listed Nellie as living there along with various boarders who had joined the household in the mid-1920s. Nellie eventually moved out around 1937 to go and live with her son, Leslie...

Leslie Wilfred Barrett

Born 21 January 1894 at Hermon House, Wallwood Road.
Joined the Royal Canadian Engineers at Vancouver, British Columbia, on 18 December 1916, at the age of 22. Was serving in Flanders in January 1918. He was discharged from the army on 24 April 1919.
Married Victoria Frederica Jessie Priddis at Wandsworth on 5 June 1920 and went to live with her parents at 8 Balham Park Road.
Had a daughter, Marjery Barrett born 3Q 1924.
Died 14 August 1950 at Cedar Cottage, Bideford, Devon, the home of his nephew, B. N. Carder.

Possibly had two daughters
  • Phyllis Louise Barrett was born c.1897.
  • Kathleen Olive was born at Wallwood Road on 21 March 1902. Married Arthur Carder 3Q 1923 at Wandsworth. Had children Peter J. (b. Barnstable, 1925), Roger A. (b. St. Thomas, 1928) and Brian N. H. (b. Exeter, 1931).
