Ed McBain cover gallery

Ed McBain, a.k.a. Evan Hunter, Richard Marsten, Hunt Collins, etc. He was born Salvatore Albert Lombino, but legally adopted the name Evan Hunter in 1952. I should say that I've not included any titles by Dean Hudson, which Hunter denied using as a pen-name for sleaze novels published by William Hamling in the 1960s. Other believe Hunter wrote at least some of the 93 novels that appeared under that byline. Certainly the books were sold as by Hunter by his agent and Earl Kemp, who worked for Hamling, believed they were by Hunter or ghosts working for Hunter. Erin E. MacDonald in Ed McBain/Evan Hunter: A Literary Companion notes similarities in a number of Hudson's books to those of Hunter but concluded that "It may never be known for certain whether Evan Hunter was Dean Hudson, but if he was, it would have been no cause for concern. Many of the Hudson books are well written and contain styles, themes, and plot devices that may have helped McBain to become a famous best-selling author."
