Norman Gnome Gets Rich part 1
What would Christmas be without a story featuring Norman Gnome? Well, it would be much the same but hopefully Norman will help you through the stresses of last-minute shopping and all the running around wrapping gifts and keeping the cat out of the Christmas tree.

Comic Cuts - 17 December 2010
Being a freelancer working from home I've not really noticed the build-up to Christmas. I spotted that the decorations were up in town when I went to do the shopping last weekend but we're now living out of town, so I've not seen the lights on. It's not worth decorating the office and we've not got around to decorating the living room yet because I'm still clearing boxes. I'm planning to clear the decks today so that we can get the tree up on Saturday... that's the plan, anyway.
And normally, working on my own, there's no office party. Well, not this year. As Mel had the day off yesterday we pushed off down the pub and had a couple of drinks and a meal, something we've not done for some while as Mel hasn't worked from home for some years. We used to pop down the local pub for lunch regularly every Friday back in the days of Comic World. It's a bit of a shock to think that Comic World folded fifteen years ago; I'm rather pleased to say that a couple of boxes of the magazine surfaced during the week as I was taking another stab at clearing Box Mountain. I'm thinking that, early next year, I may do some posts about the history of Comic World; hopefully I'll be able to dig out some more odds and ends - like the Mike Noble pic - that haven't been seen for over 15 or more years.
I've had another busy week on the run-up to Christmas. I've spent a bit of time cleaning up some artwork for a second strip that will run alongside 'Robinson Crusoe' next week. Last year, during the week running up to Christmas Eve, I ran a little strip called 'The Story of Father Christmas'. Well, the star of that strip, Norman Gnome, returns tomorrow in 'Norman Gnome Gets Rich' which will again run up to Christmas Eve. Given the madness that usually surrounds the final week before Christmas, and the fact that a lot of people are going to be working all the way up to Friday, I hope you'll take a few minutes to relax and enjoy Norman's adventure.
I posted a piece last week on book cover illustrators who had produced work for comics, so this week's random scan - or scans - reverse the situation. Harold John was one of the early members of the Frank Hampson studio who, after departing in 1953, went on to do a wide variety of illustrative work, including the cover at the head of today's column. And I mentioned Gerry Wood last week, so I thought I'd dig out an example of one of his covers, this from the Gor series by John Norman. Wood was an excellent and regular illustrator for Look and Learn and Speed & Power in the 1970s but is probably better known to readers of this blog for the five years he spent as the artist of 'The Trigan Empire' in Look and Learn in 1977-82.
See you all next week.

Robinson Crusoe part 1
The 12 days of Christmas... and what's more Christmassy that a classic children's tale retold. This one truly is a classic: Robinson Crusoe. But, as the introduction says, there's more to the story of Robinson Crusoe than is usually related in children's adaptations of Defoe's novel, so if you've never read the complete story of the mariner's adventures, this is your chance to amaze your friends with your literary prowess.
The artwork is by Colin Merrett who, by the time this strip appeared (1972) had already been drawing comics for over 35 years... and he still had another 20 to go! Definitely someone that we'll have to take a look at in the near future.

Mervyn Haisman (1928-2010)
Mervyn Haisman, who died of heart failure on 29 October 2010 aged 82, was the co-creator of two enduring monsters for the Doctor Who TV show, the Yeti and the Krang. The actor-turned-writer had been invited to pen the first Yeti series after Who actor Patrick Troughton complained about the lack of Earth-based adventures. The 6-part story 'The Abominable Snowmen', co-written with Henry Lincoln (who later co-wrote The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail, which inspired Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code), proved popular and the pair created a second story, 'The Web of Fear', which transported the hairy monsters from Tibet to the London underground. Here they encountered another character, Col. (later Brigadier) Lethbridge-Stewart, played by Nicholas Courtney, who was to become a regular part of the show for the next 21 years and, more recently, appeared in the Who spin-off, The Sarah Jane Adventures.
Haisman and Lincoln penned a third adventure, 'The Dominators', which introduced the robotic Quarks. The Quarks went on to star in a Doctor Who comic strip adventure in TV Comic which led to arguments between Haisman, Lincoln and the BBC over who owned the comic strip rights to the creatures. Haisman and Lincoln, like the Yeti and the Quarks, were not employed on the programme again.
Born in Woolwich on 15 March 1928, Mervyn Oliver Haisman won a scholarship to RADA and entertained troops in Germany whilst doing his national service after the war. After a period of repertory, he worked for the Sun Life insurance company, occasionally acting in TV dramas. He found greater success as a writer, working on episodes of Dr Finlay's Casebook, The Expert, Hadleigh, Warship and other shows. With his writing partner Lincoln he also wrote the screenplay for the Tigon movie Curse of the Crimson Altar, starring Boris Karloff and Christopher Lee.
After splitting with Lincoln, he went on to write episodes of Crown Court, Oil Strike North, The Onedin Line, Squadron and Howard's Way. He also scripted the 10-part Jane, based on the adventures of the Daily Mirror's comic strip character portrayed by Glynis Barber, and the movie Jane and the Lost City starring Kirsten Hughes. He was also the script editor on a number of television shows, notably Sutherland's Law and Jubilee.
Haisman retired to Spain in 2001 with his wife. He is survived by two of their three children.
Obituaries: The Guardian (9 December).

In Final Curtain Nagio Marsh's interest in drama and her knowledge of actors and their ways are given full play. Sir Henry Ancred, the celebrated Shakespearian actor, wishes to have his portrait painted in the role of Macbeth by Agatha Troy, the famous artist—but is only willing to spare her a week of his time in which to complete it! She is reluctant to go to his home, Ancreton, as she is awaiting the arrival of after a long absence of her husband, Chief Inspector Roderick Alleyn, at any moment. But such is the persuasive power of Sir Henry's family that she undertakes the commission and is whisked off to Ancreton, where the stage-like setting and the histrionic behaviour of the large family intrigue her, and all her powers of observation are needed when, amid a welter of practical jokes, Sir Henry dies and Chief Inspector Alleyn is called in to investigate.Swing, Brother, Swing (London, Collins, 1949; as A Wreath for Rivera, Boston, Little Brown, 1949)

Gala night at the Metronome, gayest of all the fashionable night-clubs, with Breezy Bellairs and his Boys, slickest of swing bands. To-night there is a very special attraction, for it is rumoured that the eccentric Lord Pastern is appearing with the Boys as temporary drummer. Among the after-theatre crowd in the softly-lit, over-heated dance room Chief Inspector Alleyn of Scotland Yard and his wife Troy are enjoying a private celebration. While watching the gyrations of the Boys as they put over their latest number, the celebrated detective suddenly realises that he has unwittingly combined business with pleasure; for Carlos Rivera, the piano-accordionist, is murdered before his startled eyes. A superbly written story with fascinating character, Swing, Brother, Swing will be welcomed by all those agreeing with the critic who wrote: "The brilliant Ngaio Marsh ranks with Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers."

Nothing seemed to disturb the air of smug respectability surrounding the pretty village of Chyning. But as Sir Harold Lacklander lies dying in the big house on the hill he grapples with his conscience. Finally he summons his old and trusted friend, Colonel Cartarette, and hands him for publication, the memoirs containing the guilty secret of his life.
__These memoirs are of great interest to certain inhabitants of the village, and all sorts of reactions are sparked off when Colonel Cartarette is discovered on the river bank—murdered.
__The rich background of village life, its intrigues and eccentricities, an ingenious murder and a paralysing build-up of tension combine to make this a first-class detective novel.

When the versatile Mrs. Bunz arrived at Mardian determined to investigate the rare survival of folk-dancing still practised there, no one in the village considered their strange ritual to be any busines of the rest of the world, or of Mr. Bunz. They did not foresee the macabre tragedy that was to take place on "Sword Wednesday", amidst the disguises, the dancing and the torches that lit the ruins of Mardian Castle for the ancient ceremony. Nor did Superintendent Roderick Alleyn expect to find himself with a case of such boggling complexity on his hands.Singing in the Shrouds (Boston, Little Brown, 1958)

The body was found in a drainage ditch after an April Fool's party that had featured a cross-country treasure hunt and a very noisy dog fight.
__The victim was Harold Cartell, a retired solicitor who was noted for his unbending principals and not noted for his generosity.
__The suspects included Cartell's penniless neice and nephew, several country neighbours and Mr. Pyke Period, an authority on etiquette.
__Superintendent Alleyn was faced with too many clues—and too many potential murderers.

'There's been a row in the kitchen,' said Cressida. 'They were at it hammer-and-tongs. Yelling. I was just wondering whether I ought to tell Hilly when I heard Moult come into the passage.
