Vonda N. McIntyre died on April 1, peacefully at her home in Seattle, at the age of 70. She was suffering from pancreatic cancer, discovered when she was hospitalized with jaundice in early February during the snowy weather.
Born in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1948, Vonda Neel McIntyre began writing in the 1960s, publishing her first story in 1970. She came to the forefront with short stories, amongst them ‘Wings’ (1973), ‘The Mountains of Sunset, the Mountains of Dawn’ (1974), ‘Aztecs’ (1977), ‘Fireflood’ (1979), ‘Transit’ (1983), ‘Malheaur Maar’ (1989) and ‘Steelcollar Worker’ (1992). Her Nebula Award-winning short story 'Of Mist, and Grass, and Sand' was expanded into the novel Dreamsnake, which won the Hugo and Nebula awards.
