Before he began drawing MACH1 for 2000AD, Jesus Redondo had spent over a decade drawing for girls' comics in the UK, mostly for D. C. Thomson in the pages of Diana, Spellbound and others, via the Creaciones agency of Luis Llorente.
Creaciones also picked up other work outside of the regular weekly comics, including work for the Family Planning Information Service, for whom Redondo drew the following 4-page cautionary tale.
Of course, the Holy Grail for collectors of family planning comic strips is a similar pamphlet drawn by Ian Gibson for the same agency. It needs to be preserved for posterity!
Panels from this pamphlet (and 'Don't Rush Me' is by Ian Gibson) are used in a collage by Poly Styrene (X-Ray Spex), that is currently on show in the 'Women in Revolt' exhibition at Tate Britain.
ReplyDeleteInterestingly, there are clearly two versions of 'Too Great A Risk' as in the "I'm more than a week overdue" panel used in the collage, the female protagonist is wearing a shirt not trousers, and the text from the "Sometimes you can get it for free" panel is different. If you look closely, you can see what is obviously a crudely cut out speech bubble in the version posted here, which points to this one being the later version. see the collage here: https://www.mojo4music.com/articles/stories/tate-britains-women-in-revolt-review/
