Arthur Nettleton Gaunt

Arthur Nettleton Gaunt, who also wrote as Arthur Nettleton, was born in Bradford on 14 August 1906, the son of Ernest Gaunt, a yarn salesman from Oldham, and his wife Kate Eleanor (nee Turner) of 172 St. Leonard's Road, Bradford. He was educated at Belle Vue Secondary School, Bradford, and seems to have lived in Yorkshire all his life—his various addresses including 45 Haworth Road, Heaton, Bradford [1947] and Osborne House, Piggott Street, Halifax Road, Brighouse [1960]. He was a Fellow of the Royal Geographic Society.

Gaunt spent much of his career writing feature material, often for children's publications, but also the Yorkshire Evening Post, Lancashire Evening Post, various provincial and overseas newspapers and magazines. He also wrote some fiction for boys, including the novelettes "Plane Crazy" (as by Arthur Gaunt) and "The Red Plane" (as Arthur Nettleton) for The Children's Newspaper in 1937 and 1939. He contributed articles to Boy's Own Paper, Chatterbox and various annuals, including the Daily Mail Boys Annual, Collins Boys Annual, Eagle Annual and Girl Annual.

He wrote a single short novel, Sinister Secret, for the Piccadilly Novels series published by Leicester-based printers Fiction House in 1937. His non-fiction books ranged from travel guides to works about cameras and photography.

He died in Halifax in 1978, aged 71.
