Robot Archie's message to the world

I'm running a temperature and I'm going to have an early night. To whoever passed on that bug, here's Robot Archie to let you know how I feel about it. (Seriously, that's Robot Archie sticking two fingers up at the world. You can't tell me that the editorial staff were so innocent they didn't notice!).

  1. The infamous Harvey Smith sign was in 1971. Until then surely the 'innocent' Churchilllian gesture with the hand held up with the palm facing outwards was the prevalent 'V' hand gesture so possibly as the Robot Archie artwork presumably hails from the 60's clears the artists of any deliberate skullduggery.

  2. Surely having it that way around means "peace"?
And I thought the offensive version dates back to Agincourt, or is that a historical faux-pas along the lines of "Fornication Under Consent of the King"?

  3. I think this depends on whether you think Archie is holding up his right or left hand. If it's his right, with his thumb facing left, it's a V for Victory pair of fingers. If it's his left hand, palm facing the signaller, its a more Anglo-Saxon V sign.

But you could just as easily say he's counting to three.
