Singer, comedian, games show host, actor and author Max Bygraves died on Friday, 31 August, at his home on Hope Island, Queensland, Australia, at the age of 89.
Obituaries: The Guardian (1 September), Daily Telegraph (3 September), The Independent (3 September).
Bygraves had the light-hearted comedic talent and warmth that made him attractive to comics' editors looking for stars to turn into comic strip heroes. Max starred in his own strip, drawn by Reg Parlett, in TV Fun in 1954-55, where he was nicknamed "The wise man of the East End of London".
