As this is our first comic strip in a while I thought we could do with something with a bit of excitement. Bring on the dinosaurs!
The Lost World originally appeared in Look and Learn in 1972-73, a 15-parter that began in issue 559 (30 September) and ran until issue 573 (6 January). It is based on the novel by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the first of his Professor Challenger series which continued with The Poison Belt and The Land of Mist. Aside from Sherlock Holmes, Challenger is probably Conan Doyle's most enduring creation and The Lost World his best novel (although I'm sure Rodney Stone and Sir Nigel have their fans).
This particular adaptation was drawn by Gerry Embleton, one of Britain's finest comic strip artists. Nowadays you're more likely to find his work in military books and museums - all of it superb, as you would expect - but his years drawing for comics also deserve to be remembered. He's one of the few classic adventure era artists still with us - and by classic I mean the period that ran roughly from 1950 to 1974 when the adventure strip was to the fore in a lot of British comics. Don't forget, I'm getting on in years now and comics like Battle Picture Weekly and 2000AD I still think of as quite new, even if they started over 30 years ago!
