Jack Hayes

Jack Hayes was one of the finest artists of Bible illustrations to work for Bible Story. He's also one of the most mysterious. His work has recently been mentioned in the comments for Paul Rainer where I mentioned that he had also painted a number of paperback covers in the early 1970s. But beyond that there doesn't seem to be much known.

Hayes contributed a number of illustrations to The New Oxford Illustrated Bible (Oxford University Press, n.d.) and to Flags of the World by I. O. Evans (Hamlyn, 1970).

In the early 1970s he illustrated paperback covers for Corgi and Fontana on titles as wide-ranging as The Long Wait and Kiss Me, Deadly by Mickey Spillane (both 1970), Too Few For Drums by R. F. Delderfield, Only the Valiant and Great Legends of the West, both by Charles Marquis Warren (all 1972), The Gallows Herd by Maureen Peters and Steamboat Gothic by Frances Parkinson Keyes (both 1973).

If anyone can add anything to this rather sketchy C.V., please drop me a line. You can see more examples of Jack Hayes' contributions to Bible Story in the Look and Learn Picture Gallery.

  1. I'd love to know more about Jack Hayes - I've collected quite a few of his book covers now at https://www.flickr.com/photos/pulpcrush/sets/72157630540603512/

  2. I have a copy of the Oxford bible from the 70's. It is not like any I have seen on the web. It is small; about 4" x 5" and has 12 absolutely amazing illustrations in it by Jack Hayes. I cannot find these images on the web anywhere.

  3. I am also curious to learn more about this prolific artist/illustrator. I have several volumes in the Angélique historical romance series, published by Bantam books in the mid-late 1970's, with his covers. It appears that he also illustrated earlier editions of the Angélique books, published by Pan a few years earlier.
