Ifor Owen, born in Cefnddwysarn, Merioneth, Wales, on 3 July 1915, spent 40 years as a primary school teacher and headmaster and, for as many years, also published a Welsh-language comic, Hwyl ("Fun"). The first issue appeared in July 1949 and featured Owen's 'Defi John & Tomi Puw' strip. Other artists and writers also contributed to the magazine which sold around 8,000 copies per issue. It eventually folded in 1989. Owen died in Dolgellau, Gwynedd, on 22 May 2007, aged 91.
Obituaries: BBC Cymru'r (in Welsh, 22 May), Daily Post (23 May), The Independent (31 May).
P.S. I wonder if he's the same Ifor Owen who received the unfortunately funny screen credit "Villager in 'Sailors Arms'" in the 1972 movie of Under Milk Wood.
