Muriel G. Nix

A quickie...

Muriel G. Nix contributed to Swift Annual 5 (1958). Other than a short (48-page) collection of stories published in 1939 (listed below), I can find very little about her. She may be the Muriel G. Nix listed in the 1881 England census: Muriel Grace Nix was born in Eastbourne, Sussex, in 1880, the daughter of John (a jeweller) and Mary D. Nix, and was educated at a boarding school in Camberwell. If that's her, she'd have been in her late seventies when the Swift Annual story appeared... but I can't find any trace of another Muriel G. Nix (Muriel Nix being a very uncommon name even without the middle initial).

Collections
Mrs. Winkle, and other stories. London, A. H. Stockwell, 1939.

  1. Muriel Grace Nix's profession was given as a teacher in the 1911 Census and 1939 Register, in the latter with a birth date of 30 Sep 1880; she worked in schools in Monmouthshire and Essex on those occasions. Her death record gives her birth date as 20 Sep 1880. Her grant of probate gives her death date as 24 Nov 1979 and her residence as Eastbourne, where she was born and died. Being a teacher would reinforce the likelihood she was the author of such works for children, as well as the uniqueness of her name.

  2. Thanks for the update. This was written before the 1939 Register and latest census records were available and I haven't had a chance to go back over everything. I'll be very happy when the 1921 census is published... it might solve a lot of little mysteries.
