Ivy Russell was born Ivy Ethel Southern in Southall, Middlesex, on 6 January 1909, the daughter of George William Southern (an accounts clerk) and his wife Jessie (nee Whitmee). Educated at Harrow County School for Girls, she worked as a telephone operator and, later, as was an emergency foster mother for infants placed with London County Council as well as a fairly prolific writer for magazines, including Woman's Mirror, Red Letter, Sunday Companion, various girls' annuals and other titles.
She was married to John Russell on 15 December 1935 and had three children. She lived in Harrow, Middlesex.
