Random Notes on Look & Learn Artists 2

More artists who contributed to Look and Learn and related titles about whom I know very little.

Leonard (G.) Appleby (1929- ). Born in Kingston-on-Thames, Appleby was the author and illustrator of two books on snakes, British Snakes (1971) and Snakes (1983). Contributed to The Countryside.

Gordon (C.) Arnold (1910- ). Artist who contributed to Treasure. Arnold studied at the City School of Art in Liverpool and was noted for his architectural illustration and engraving. He exhibited in Liverpool and at the Royal Academy. He lived in Bromborough, Wirrall.


John J. Arnold (?- ). Contributed to Look and Learn and Speed & Power. Specialised in diagramatical illustrations of cars.

P. J. Ashmore (?- ). Contributed to Look and Learn.

John Barber (1932- ). Contributed to Ranger. Illustrated numerous books, including volumes of the 'How and Why Wonder Book' series from Transworld, the 'Nature Trail' series for Usborne and 'The Young Scientist Investigates' series for Oxford University Press.

Stefan Barany (?- ). Contributed to Treasure. Barany was an irregular cover artist for Fleetway's war libaries and the Sexton Blake Library (for who he produced almost two dozen covers between 1961 and 1963).

John Beswick (?- ). Contributed to Look and Learn via Greystock and Marsh agency. Illustrated various titles for Hamlyn, including Mammals of the World (1970), Undersea Exploration (1971), Fortune Telling (1972), Spotlight on Wild Animals (1973) and, for Blackwells, Submarines (1973).

P. J. Bird (?- ). Contributed cut-away drawings to Speed & Power.

Janet Blakely (?- ). Contributed to Look and Learn.

Robert Brook (?- ). Produced dozens of covers Look and Learn from around 1967 and notably illustrated the series 'Dancing Round the World' in 1968. We have many examples of his artwork up on the Look and Learn web site.


Ralph Bruce
(?- ). Contributed to The Children's Newspaper and Look and Learn. Bruce was a cover artist for paperbacks, including Digit Books. Later contributed illustrations to a number of books published by Beckenham-based Patterson Blick, including Ancient Egypt (1970) and Football (1970). Some examples of his artwork can be found here.

Jeff Burn (?- ). Contributed to Look and Learn.
