Our local library had a good selection of Arthur C. Clarke's books and, of course, I had loads of his stories in Speed & Power, so I never bought and owned many of his paperbacks. Asimov was trickier to find in the library, so I ended up buying them rat a time when Chris Foss was doing many of the covers, which kick-started my love of SF cover art. Thirty-five years later I've come full circle and the various cover galleries I've run over the past few years - and Sci-Fi Art: A Graphic History - have been the result.

(* My thanks to Iain Bell for the loan of a box of Asimov's books which helped fill a lot of gaps!)
I used to hate it when Panther were doing those weird 'Guess the Object' photo covers for SF authors like Asimov, and Eric Frank Russell. The funny thing is that they look incredibly nostalgic to me now as they were the editions I read most of those books in!
ReplyDeleteI was fortunate that the wheel had turned by the time I started reading Asimov and Panther were back to painted covers by the mighty Chris Foss. Peter Elson, Angus McKie and other Young Artists' artists were getting active and Eddie Jones, Bruce Pennington and others were busy for Sphere, New English Library and the like. And Science Fiction Monthly had just been launched. Heady days!
ReplyDeleteI'm ashamed of you Steve. You didn't put a link to that guy Holland's blog:
ReplyDeleteFoundation Trilogy
Heady days indeed! I can still remember how excited I was when I saw my first Chris Foss painting on the cover of Mayflower's 1971 edition of 'Rockets in Ursa Major' by Fred and Geoffrey Hoyle!
ReplyDeleteThanks for upping these. It must have taken ages. Clearly a labour of love - and with impressive results.
