Andrew Garve (Paul Winterton)

Andrew Garve was the pen-name of reporter and foreign correspondent Paul Winterton (1908-2001), who worked for the News Chronicle in the 1930s, becoming their Moscow correspondent in 1942 for the duration of the war. After publishing a number of non-fiction books, his first novel appeared under the pen-name Roger Bax. A few years later he began writing as Andrew Garve and, later still, he began a series of novels as Paul Somers.

Winterton was a first-rate thriller writer, his work ranging from police detective novels set in London to adventure stories set around the world, notably in Russia. Four of his novels were filmed, including The Megstone Plot, as A Touch of Larceny (1959), and Death and the Sky Above (1962) and a number of others inspired TV shows. Winterton was one of the founding members of the Crime Writers' Association.

  2. Marvelous gathering of paperbacks. I agree, Garve is a twentieth-century crime writer who very much deserves to be remembered in the 21st.
